Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens (2015) - Storyline:

Star Wars: Episode VII The Force Awakens is the upcoming seventh live-action theatrical Star Wars film and the first film of the sequel trilogy. The film is directed by J.J. Abrams, written by Abrams, Michael Arndt, and Lawrence Kasdan, and produced by Kathleen Kennedy and Bad Robot Productions. The film, which is currently in production, will be released on December 18, 2015. (December 17, in Mexico and the rest of Latin America).Despite initially claiming that the Star Wars story ended in Star Wars: Episode VI Return of the Jedi, and spending years refuting speculation that there would be another film, George Lucas began work on the story of Episode VII in 2011 in order to increase the value of Lucasfilm Ltd. before he sold it to The Walt Disney Company. The acquisition was finalized on October 30, 2012, and Disney and Lucasfilm officially announced Episode VII the same day.

Disney CEO Bob Iger announced Tuesday that “Star Wars: Episode VII” starts shooting in May and that it takes place 30 years after the events of “Return of the Jedi.” In Tuesday’s shareholders meeting, Iger also revealed that the much-anticipated film will feature “some very familiar faces, as well as a trio of new young leads.” Six weeks out from shooting, so far the only confirmed cast member is R2-D2.

The official “Star Wars” website confirms the May 2014 start date, listing that director J.J. Abrams plans to start principal photography at Pinewood Studios in London. The film is “well into pre-production,” according to Iger. “Episode VII” wasn’t the only sequel Iger mentioned Tuesday. He also announced that Brad Bird is working on a story for “The Incredibles 2″, and that Disney is developing a third “Cars” film. J.J. Abrams first announced in November that R2-D2 would be back. Kenny Baker has played the role in every “Star Wars” film so far, and R2’s sounds were provided by Ben Burtt — the sound designer responsible for the lightsaber hum and Darth Vader’s heavy breathing.

brams spoke Sunday at the Television Critics Association summer press tour, where he’s promoting his new NBC series, “Believe.” He confirmed that Plemons is among the actors he’s speaking with, and expressed surprise about the reports of his talks with the actor. “He is one of the actors that we’ve talked to, yeah,” Abrams said. “But, you know. It’s not often that I read about actors that I’m going to be meeting … that I get to read articles about actors who are going to come in. And so I get to see someone and say, ‘Oh, I read that I’m going to see you.’ … It’s usually agents talking to people about what’s happening. It’s a lot of noise.”

Bringing back a character who had been the primary antagonist for the previous six Star Wars films could lend a sense of symmetry to this new Star Wars trilogy, but it would do nothing to prepare the series for future installments. This new trilogy is intended to be a launching pad for a whole new Star Wars media empire, and along with Rebels and the spinoff films, Episode VII will dictate the direction of the franchise.
